FUTURE PERFORMANCES
TUDOR MASTERPIECES
22 September, 7.30pm
All Saints' Blackheath
The Iken Scholars are returning to All Saints' Blackheath to explore the astonishing world of royal patronage of music in the Tudor court. We'll be looking right across the Tudor dynasty, from Henry VII, through the turbulent reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary, to the stability established over Elizabeth I's long reign. As well as some familiar masterpieces (Sheppard's Media Vita and White's Magnificat among them), we'll be exploring some lesser-known works, including Tallis' intricate Miserere Nostri and a piece reputedly by Henry VIII himself. To help us along the way, we'll have a selection of facsimiles of the pieces we are singing to allow you to get closer to how the music originally 'looked'.

All Saints' Blackheath
Forwards, backwards, upside down, twice as fast, three times as slow, start together and then start apart. Welcome to the baffling, playful and occasionally maddening world of the Renaissance riddle. Together we’ll be exploring the fun and meaning behind some of the Renaissance’s most perplexing musical games. We’ll also take a special diversion into the so called si placet repertoire of motets that grew arms and legs after their composer’s deaths!

PALESTRINA: THE LAST YEARS
6 July, 7.30pm
All Saints' Blackheath
Time to look at the final years of one of the Renaissance’s great Titans: Palestrina. As well as works from his mature years, we’ll look at his role in establishing Rome’s first professional guild of musicians, a ‘lifetime achievement’ award in the form of a mass with seven composers, and we’ll be assessing his legacy beyond the immediate confines of Renaissance Rome.
